HALLOWEEEEEN...
Was there a tiger there or?
the parenthetical interrupt allows the reader to hear Charles's thoughts which may suggest that some of the story -like the tiger- is in Charles's head.
What's up with the title? (Here There Be Tyger)
The title references Ray Bradbury's story of the name more than fifteen years earlier, about astronauts that land on a planet where what they think becomes real, just like Charles's imagination makes the actions of the tiger 'real'. Also, medieval map makers used the term "Here Be Dragons" to mark unknown, danger areas, which can relate to Charles' dangerous mind and the danger of the bathroom/basement. William Blake's poem, "The Tyger', is about the evil in the world like the evil in Charles' mind.
Second Horror Story...
Next the class read 'The Statement of Randolph Carter' by H.P. Lovecraft. Before they began to read Mr Hanlon asked his students to write down bits when there was fear, terror and horror. He also asked his students to locate the following words and find the definitions for: Aperture, rank, miasmal, sepulchre, slab, electric lantern.
The students responses to the story:
-Interesting
- Didn't like it
- Didn't know what was going to happen
- it was basically about a guy in a hole? Boring
- scarier that "Here There Be Tygers"
- Very descriptive
- Suspenseful
- I liked "Here There Be Tygers' more, it had more horror
- This story had more terror
- There wasn't really anything that was horrific except the end
- I liked the ending, it was funny
